September is National Suicide Awareness Month. Tens of thousands of people tragically lose their lives to suicide each year (one every 11 minutes in the United States). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10-14 and 25-34; it is the third leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15-24. Resources like the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Dial 988, can make a difference in connecting people with the support they need. Please do not hesitate to call or text the lifeline if you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis or suicidal thoughts. Also available is our local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Berkshire County) at (413) 443-1666 or nammibc@namibc.org.

Dr. & Mrs. Collins were delighted to be among the over 300 people who turned out at the Pittsfield Country Club on Saturday to honor State Representative Smitty Pignatelli and his decades of public service to the Berkshires. The tributes and testimonials crossed political parties and included the present Governor and two former Governors (one of them in person), both U.S. Senators from Massachusetts, U.S. Representatives, dozens upon dozens of state legislators, county and local officials, plus a special message from basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Smitty's family shared heartfelt, and less public, tales of his selflessness and commitment to his constituents. Thank you, Smitty, for your public service and for being a friend to public education. Best wishes on your retirement from the Massachusetts Legislature and whatever the next chapters hold in store.

“Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher” - Japanese proverb This morning, The Mount graciously lent their most gorgeous of Berkshires settings to LPS for our Convocation. The staff returned in high spirits as they gathered under the giant lawn tent where they were welcomed by the Superintendent, Dr. Collins, and by Oren Cass, Chair of the School Committee. This year's keynote speakers were LPS students, representing every grade level, who shared with the staff what they like the most about attending Morris and LMMHS and what they were eagerly looking forward to when they return to school in two days time. Time was set aside for Education Association business and for a whole District team-building scavenger hunt on the grounds. The morning wrapped up with an al fresco lunch on the lawn (thank you to Market 32 for the public school discount) before staff returned to their respective school buildings for trainings, drills, and final preparations for the return of our students!
